Volume Above Surface

Find out if an object will sink, rest or float in a given liquid.

The three states of an object in a liquid are floating, sinking, or remaining at rest. An object will float if its density is less than the density of the liquid it is placed in. If the object's density is greater than the density of the liquid, it will sink. If the object's density is equal to the density of the liquid, it will remain at rest at a specific depth in the liquid. These concepts are related to Archimedes' Principle, which states that the buoyant force on an object in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object.

The formula for determining if an object will float in a liquid is defined as:
\(where\)
\(F < 0 \rightarrow float\)
\(F\) \(=\) \(0 \rightarrow rest \)
\(F > 0 \rightarrow sink\)
\(F\): Total force exerted on the object
\(F_w\): The gravitational force exerted on the object
\(F_b\): The buoyant force exerted on the object
\(m\): the mass of the object
\(\rho_o\): the density of the object
\(\rho_l\): the density of the liquid
\(g\): the gravity
The SI unit of buoyancy is: \(kilogram \text{ }(square \text{ } meter)\)
